2009 Spyker C8 Aileron

A month ago, we were the first to give you the first behind the wheel impression of the new Spyker C8 Aileron from a brief cruise at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

In that piece, we covered all the basics of the car, from the brand's Dutch roots and quirky airplane-influenced style to the Aileron's turned aluminum dash and $50-a-pop toggle switches. Since then, we've spent more time with the Aileron at a recent prospective buyers' event at Miller Motor Sports Park outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and unearthed more interesting facts about what makes this Spyker so special:

  • The Aileron is the third model in the Spyker C8 family, which includes the Spyder cabriolet and Laviolette hardtop. All are two-seat, two-door sports cars with mid-engine layouts and rear drive.

  • The Aileron exists primarily because the original C8 Spyder and Laviolette come only with manual transmissions. Automatic transmissions are not possible in the C8, given its short-wheelbase, mid-engine configuration. Because of the demand, Spyker retooled the aluminum spaceframe and body, lengthening the wheelbase to accept a ZF six-speed automatic.

  • Founder and CEO Victor Muller says he chose an automatic transmission with a traditional torque converter instead of a sequential manual or dual clutch transmission because shift smoothness, not speed, is the priority for his customer.

  • The Aileron's aluminum space frame is built for Spyker by Coventry Prototype Panels. CPP specializes in low-volume, high-quality manufacturing with specialized materials such as aluminum. Bentley and Rolls-Royce are among its clientele. CPP also assisted Aston Martin in producing the One-77.

  • No steel, carbon fiber or plastic is used anywhere in the Aileron's chassis or space frame. Very little is used in the interior as well. To remain true to Spyker's aircraft heritage, Muller made sure that whenever possible, aircraft-grade aluminum was utilized, such as in the frame, body, and even touch points like A/C vents and the $50-a-pop toggle switches.
