Fiat SpA, Italy's largest manufacturer, said second-quarter profit rose 1.9 percent as higher sales in Brazil offset a slump in its home market. Fiat rose as much as 8 percent in Milan trading.

TOP 6  -  Mini planning battery-car sales in 2009



BMW's Mini brand plans to have electric cars on US roads by the middle of 2009 though it's not sure yet whether to sell or lease them.There range is also unknown. Mini USA's Jim McDowell wouldn't say how far the electric car will be able to go on a charge and that recent reports that Mini would sell 500 electric vehicles in California in 2009 were premature.

TOP 5  -  Nissan's Ghosn sees no 2009 US auto recovery



Nissan Motor Co does not expect U.S. auto sales to bounce back in 2009 after a sharp decline this year, Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said on Tuesday. Ghosn said Nissan expected industrywide U.S. sales to be near 14.3 million units in 2008, down from 16.15 million in 2007. Next year's tally would be about the same at 14.3 million, he said, adding that the risk was for a lower figure.

TOP 3  -  GM plugs public car-charging stations



Detroit-based General Motors (NYSE: GM) made the announcement before the start of the Plug-In 2008 conference at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, saying it will team with 30 utilities in 37 states, as well as the Electric Power Research Institute, on the project. The aim is to fine-tune the technology, safety and customer experience for car-charging stations by 2010 when the Chevy Volt is slated to debut.
