TOP 5 - GM plugs public car-charging stations

Detroit-based General Motors (NYSE: GM) made the announcement before the start of the Plug-In 2008 conference at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, saying it will team with 30 utilities in 37 states, as well as the Electric Power Research Institute, on the project. The aim is to fine-tune the technology, safety and customer experience for car-charging stations by 2010 when the Chevy Volt is slated to debut.

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. said yesterday it would lay off salaried workers, cut truck production, suspend its dividend and borrow $2 billion to $3 billion to weather a severe downturn in the U.S. market.GM said the moves would raise $15 billion to help cover losses and turn around its North American operations, including $10 billion from internal cost-cutting and $5 billion from selling some assets and borrowing against others.

Porsche won permission from the European Commission on Wednesday to acquire control of Volkswagen 'The Commission's examination of the transaction showed that horizontal verlaps between Volkswagen and Porsche are limited,' the EU executive said in a statement.
