TOP 9 - Kobe rolls like Doc Brown to launch McFly kicks

Ford - Kobe

As expected, there was a huge turn out following the breaking news of the Back to the Future Marty McFly inspired Nike Hyperdunk just days before the release. Making sure aficionado’s got what they waited so eagerly for, the good people at Undefeated set up a surprise for the ages. Not only did Mr.Laker show up but he showed up in retro fashion, with the timeless classic DMC Delorean by his side. The first 10 people in line, got to meet Kobe Bryant, take a picture with him and even get his autograph on the highly sought after sneakers, after a long wait that extended past 24 hours.

TOP 8 - Lumma releases teaser of CLR X650 BMW X6

Ford - Lumma

You may remember Lumma Design’s X530. At it again, the company has managed to take the creamy-sweetness that is the X6 and smack it with a rousing batch of over the top. It’s one of those cars you can’t stop looking at whether you want to or not. The Sub Lime paint looks like it would be more at home on a ‘Cuda than a Bimmer, but we’re not fashion designers. So far, the stats are mostly cosmetic, with a gaping front fascia that looks like it was borrowed from Matchbox’s design center, flared fenders and new side-view mirrors. The whole rig gets dropped 40 mm, or about an inch and a half for a more squat look, and epic 23 inch black rollers should house appropriately huge stoppers. It remains to be seen whether this tricked SUV will be able to go toe to toe with ENCO’s twin turbo Cayenne. We’ll have to wait until Lumma’s ride gets unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October.

TOP 7 - BMW 335i wagon won't be coming Stateside

Ford - BMW

Just like the new 7-Series, master amateur spy photographer Levy, caught a lightly camo’d version of the refreshed BMW 3-Series creeping around the Mojave. An image of a non-duct taped 2009 3-Series showed up on the web yesterday along with news that the 3-Series Wagon will be becoming the 335i Wagon. Meaning the diminutive people hauler will get the “300 hp” twin turbo I6 that the coupe, convertible and sedan have had for years. As a WRX wagon owner, this made me happy. But then reality set in — BMW refuses to the sell the 507 hp M5 Touring (wagon) here in the States. Audi will not bring over their manic, 580+ hp twin-turbo V10 RS6 Avant, nor my dream car, the relatively humble 420 ho RS4 Avant. So, I shot off an email to our friends at BMW asking if the 335i Wagon would make it across the Atlantic. “There are no plans to offer our 300hp twin-turbo I-6 engine in the 3 Series Sport Wagon for the USA.” Rats, foiled again.

TOP 5 - Bizarre Lotus Eagle campaign uses weird, faceless people

Ford - Lotus

Ferrari played their cards extremely well with the 2009 Ferrari California debut — it was stylish, it was measured, and it had the motoring press lapping out of the palms of their hands (a perfect example is today's spy photo of a topless California; see how Wert just laps it up? ). Lotus seems to be copying that campaign for the rollout of the pending 2010 Lotus Eagle, but this time, the marketing effort is decidedly more creepy. The "FacelessPeople" ad campaign consists at the moment of a website with a countdown timer, and, more bizarrely, people without faces attending public events wearing Lotus badges. Gah! Heebie jeebies anyone? Apparently the "True Character Will Emerge" in about 18 days. We're assuming that means they'll put a face on the much-anticipated new Eagle instead of covering it in a sheet.

TOP 4 - The solution to high gas prices? Drive less!

Ford - Gas

Since Toyota, like other automakers doing business in the U.S., is currently unable to supply enough hybrids and other small fuel efficient cars to meet consumer demand, they are offering up other suggestions on how to conserve gas. Over on the Open Road blog, they have talked about hypermiling before but there is a solution that saves even more fuel and emissions. In a shocker for a car company, they actually suggest driving less.

TOP 1 - Ford to Cut Jobs at Truck Plant

Ford - Cut Jobs

The auto maker is reducing the amount of shifts it operates in the stamping, body and paint operations at the plant, which until recently was one of the most profitable factories in its sprawling production footprint. Employees were informed Thursday morning, and have the option of taking a buyout package from the auto maker, Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski said.

The Detroit-3 jobs were safe when consumers had no alternative to their ill-designed, poor quality products and unacceptable after sales service. No more!
