1. Audi Rosemeyer

The Audi Rosemeyer concept is not a prototype ready to be driven, nor was it created in anticipation of a production vehicle.

Looking like a suit of armor the Rosemeyer visualises the technological potential of the Audi brand.

A window at the rear of the Rosemeyer's cockpit provides a clear view of this car's powerful heart, the mid-mounted 8 litre W16 engine.

2. Audi Nero

The Audi Nero concept car was designed for the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Audi Nero is part of a design challenge sponsored by the LA auto show. The challenge invited designers from 10 of the top design studios to come up with future transport concepts for 10, 20 and 30 years into the future. Audi's Nero concept is meant as the ultimate vehicle to go nightclubbing in. The Nero's sinister lines and elongated dimensions make for a batmobile-esq appearance, no doubt impressive in the flesh. The Audi Nero's covered wheel arches are similar to the ones used on the Audi RSQ concept featured in the movie 'I, robot'

3. Audi O

The 2008 Audi O concept was designed by Ondrej Jirec, a design student from the Czech Republic who is beginning studies at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California in 2008.

The Audi O concept was designed to fuse a powerful and innovative audio system with a stylish and sporty four-seat hatchback. The exterior design uses several Audi trademark styling themes, especially at the front where the square grille sits neatly between the LED headlights. The doors feature glass windows running along the bottom edge which provide an interesting shape to the profile of the car. At the rear of the car the pullout door echoes the design of the squared off Audi grille.

The styling of the Audi O was influenced by a variety of sources including the Audi Shooting Brake concept from 2005, the Apple iPod and music.

The interior of the Audi O concept is bright and airy thanks to a full length panoramic roof which floods the cabin with light. Inside, the passenger compartment has been separated from the engine compartment by a double firewall to help keep out external noise which might interfere with the powerful sound system.

The Audi O concept features a unique audio system which has internet connectivity for downloading music onto the built-in 650 GB hard drive. When parked up a Bluetooth system can connect two or more Audi O cars to play audio over a wider area. In this situation, a host Audi O is set to be the source of sound and the other vehicles act as speakers.

The Audi O also features a pullout rear door fitted with a DJ set with mixing decks. The decks can also be removed and used anywhere outside the car.

Powering the Audi O concept is fuel efficient diesel/electric hybrid drivetrain

4. Audi R-Zero

The Audi R- Zero concept is the work of a transport designer and two digital designers from the International Design School, France.

Franck Levivier, Rémi Marchand and Pierre-Olivier Wagner's collaboration centered around a desire to create a concept supercar for a time when the world could no longer rely on oil for a source of power.

Essential to the R-Zero's design was a belief that despite the cars environmentally friendly credentials it should have the ability to excite.

A projected 1091 horsepower comes from four individual in-wheel electric motors powered by a row of batteries positioned just forward of the rear axle.

One of the advantages of the electric drivetrain layout is that it has allowed the R-Zero's designers to capitalise on the cooling airflow provided by the front grille. Running the length of the Audi R-Zero is a hollow backbone frame which channels airflow in though the front grille, distributes cooling air to various temperature sensitive components - like the brakes, and then expels the air out the central rear grille.

Despite its gorgeous lines and innovative engineering, the Audi R-Zero is only a concept. There are no plans to build a working one-off. Let alone put the vehicle into production.

5. Audi TT Clubsport Quattro

The Audi TT Clubsport Quattro revealed in May 2007 is a design study intended to show the TT in its purest form.

The goal Audi's development engineers set themselves for the TT Clubsport Quattro vehicle study was to cut the car down to the bare driving essentials. No roof, no A-pillars - instead, a wraparound windscreen kept extremely low and which deliberately evokes images of a speedster. The flat, slightly tinted window strip surrounds the cockpit. The panoramic windscreen and the two humps located behind the interior in place of the hood compartment are reminiscent of a racing car. The rollover bars familiar from the TT Roadster are kept flatter and are the same height as the sports bucket seats.

Like all contemporary Audi products the TT Clubsport Quattro features the prominent single-frame grille, this time with aluminium inserts to give its design a horizontal emphasis. This has the effect of giving the TT Clubsport a wider appearance than it already has. It also features the Audi logo on the bonnet rather than the grille - this badge layout was first seen on the Audi Shooting Brake Concept.

The TT Clubsport Quattro concept is painted Daytona Grey, a color that Audi used for the first time on the RS 4 and the Audi S8. This forms a subtle contrast with the metallic elements, the grille and side grille in Gun Metal, a steely color which supplies the TT Clubsport Quattro concept with an appearance which is both simple and aggressive. The orange colored brake calipers link the exterior design to the interior and provide a visual contrast. The orange also highlights interior elements such as the instrument cowl, the armrest and the back of the bucket seats.

The racing character of the Audi TT Clubsport Quattro study is further underscored by its technology. The Audi engineers have packed the 2.0 litre TFSI engine with even more power than the 260 bhp unit found in the Audi S3. The turbocharged four-cylinder unit with petrol direct injection now achieves 300 bhp. The power increase is due to a modified intake manifold. Power is transferred to all four wheels, making the TT Clubsport Quattro the first new-generation TT equipped with a four-cylinder engine and quattro permanent four-wheel drive.

The transmission of the TT Clubsport Quattro is a dual clutch, S tronic direct-shift gearbox which can change gear virtually without interrupting the flow of power, a process that goes unnoticed by the driver. The six gears can, however, also be changed manually, with gearshifts taking just fractions of a second.

6. Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro

The Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro concept car is due to go on display at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The diminutive A1 is designed to go head-to-head with the highly successful BMW MINI when it goes into production around 2009.

The styling of the A1 Metroproject Quattro isn't as aggressive as most of Audi's products, although the chunky lines, high beltline , wheel hugging arches, and large central grille do fit in with the rest of Audi's lineup. However the rear panel and taillights have a shape more fitting of a BMW than an Audi.

Inside the A1 Metroproject Quattro concept Audi have given the car a simple yet stylish appearance, which looks nearly production ready. The only far-out design feature of the A1 Metroproject Quattro is the "Audi Mobile Device". This is a removable, Audi-branded, phone, MP3 player and navigation system with a touch sensitive screen. The device is also capable of controlling some of the A1's functions including locking/unlocking the doors, turning the climate control on so you can heat up or cool down the interior from the comfort of your house before you set out, and it even acts as a surveillance system. Should your Audi A1 go missing, cameras inside the car will send the Audi Mobile Device pictures of the intruder, while at the same time a tracking beacon is activated helping police to locate the car.

Power for the A1 Metroproject Quattro comes from a hybrid drivetrain incorporating a 150 horsepower 1.4 liter TSFI engine up front, and a 41 horsepower electric motor at the rear. The lithium-ion batteries supplying the electrical power can be topped up from any mains socket, and give the concept a 60 mile all-electric range.

To further reduce the A1's affect on the environment Audi have fitted the concept with an engine stop/start system to cut emissions when sat in traffic. While regenerative braking helps top up the electricity supply during braking.

7. Audi Cross Coupe Quattro

The Audi Cross Coupe Quattro concept was presented at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show. The Cross Coupé Quattro attempts to combine the design and styling of a compact premium sports car with the spaciousness and versatility of a four-seat sport utility vehicle (SUV). Although many would struggle to find the sports car influences in the Cross Coupe's exterior design.

The proportions and the large 20" wheels of the Audi Cross Coupe Quattro concept point clearly towards the off-road potential of the vehicle. A new element is the fabric folding roof, which, when it is open, gives optimum levels of headroom and fresh air. The hood is opened and closed electrically.

Power for the Audi Cross Coupe Quattro Concept comes from a transversely mounted 2-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel developing 204 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. To give the Cross Coupe Quattro some off-road credentials the concept is fitted with Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system. A Haldex clutch ensures that traction is precisely distributed according to the situation. The sporty Audi S tronic dual-clutch gearbox executes gearshifts in a matter of milliseconds.

The design of the four-door Audi Cross Coupe Quattro concept presents itself as a further step in the evolution of the current Audi style. The prominent single-frame radiator grille, the proportions, with large areas of metal and narrow glazing at the sides, and the powerful rear end identify the SUV as a relative of the Audi Q7. The robust-looking sill area with its colour offset and the heavily embossed dynamic line above it emphasise the vehicle's off-road character.

As previously seen on the Audi Shooting Brake concept, the trapeze of the large single-frame grille with its vertical slats gives the front end an emphatically self-assured appearance. Particularly eye-catching are the three-dimensional main headlights, which incorporate LED technology. The reflector dishes concentrate the light to form a powerful, uniform beam whose white tone is easy on the eye, even on long night-time journeys. Naturally, the daytime running lights, which take the form of a horizontal strip, also employ LED technology. In addition to its design qualities, this also provides for an especially low level of energy consumption.

8. Audi Steppenwolf

The Audi Steppenwolf concept from 2000 was a vehicle designed to be as capable on roads as it is on gravel tracks and mild off-road terrain.

The chassis of the Audi Steppenwolf concept (which was based on the Audi A3/TT platform) features 4-level air suspension, giving up to 223 mm of round clearance. The suspension settings adapt to suit the driving surfaces and conditions. Powering the Steppenwolf concept was a 3.2 litre V6 which produced 220 horsepower. This was coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox driving all four wheels through Audi's proven full-time quattro AWD system. This setup gave the Steppenwolf a 0-60 mph time of under 8 seconds.

The Audi Steppenwolf featured deeply contoured bumpers, painted dark grey to contrast with the sandy body color. These were designed to highlight the vehicles off-road potential, just like the spotlights in the door mirrors.

The Steppenwolf could be fitted with either a carbon fibre hardtop or a detachable soft top. The soft top for the Audi Steppenwolf is made of sealed textile fabric and, as on many off-road cars, is fitted by hand.

9. Audi Type-D

The 2008 Auto Union Type-D concept is a creation of Lukas Vanek, a young designer from the Czech Republic. In 2008 Vanek graduated from the Europeo di Design (IED) in Torino, Italy after completing a three year postdiploma transportation design course. Prior to these studies Vanek had finished a masters course in industrial design at the TBU university in Zlin, where he was awarded a scholarship to study at IED.

The 2008 Auto Union Type-D concept was inspired by the old Auto Union race cars from the 1930s. These cars, piloted by some of the best racing drivers in the world, were at the cutting edge of automotive technology. The supercharged engines developed nearly 550 horsepower, and could spin the rear wheels at over 100 mph. In the hands of drivers like Hans Stuck, Tazio Nuvolari, and Bernd Rosemeyer Auto Union cars won many Grand Prix races.

During World War II almost all the Auto Union race cars were destroyed. The survivors were either dismantled or taken to Russia for examination. Auto Union itself (which had been a conglomeration of four manufacturers Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer) struggled as a company after the war, and it was only in the 1960's that the Audi name was resurrected. Audi's revival also brought back the now famous four interlocking rings badge, which had originally been a trademark of Auto Union.

The body of the 2008 Auto Union (Audi) Type-D concept is constructed from two different materials. Carbon fibre composite provides the structural support and rigidity, while a metal skin gives the exterior an authentic, simple finish. Behind the single, central drivers seat is a 6.5 litre twelve-cylinder engine producing 650 horsepower (478 kW). The proposed top speed for the Audi Type-D concept is 186 mph (300 km/h).

While the 2008 Type-D concept is influenced by a design which is nearly 70 years old, it manages to look sleek and contemporary at the same time. Styling elements like the central LED taillight strip, exposed carbon fibre centre spine, and barely visible carbon fibre rear spoiler tucked under the tail give the car a very modern feel. The large wheels have also been cleverly styled. The low profile tires with their unique tread pattern help to bring the Type-D into the 21st century.

10. Audi ASQ

The Audi ASQ concept is an advanced futuristic design created by Hongik University Transport Design graduate Juyoung Kim. The ASQ has been designed for the year 2040 and a world where the worst-case global warming predictions have materialized and the sea levels have risen dramatically due to the melting of the polar ice caps.

The Audi ASQ concept is equipped to deal with the rise in water levels due to its ability to travel both on land and water. It even has submersible capabilities. On land the ASQ uses an advanced form of Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system which features four independent electric motors, one for each wheel. The front wheels are spherical in shape which helps to increase maneuverability. Once in the water the ASQ switches over to an aquatic version of the quattro drive system which uses water jet propulsion - similar to a jetski. Water jets positioned in the front, rear and sides mean the ASQ could move in any direction once underwater.

The interior of the Audi ASQ concept features three seats - instead of a more conventional four seat layout - in order to increase the overall space for the occupants. The feeling of space is however further enhanced through the use of a 100% transparent upper section of the cabin which incorporates a single piece windscreen, roof, and rear window and frameless side windows. The floor of the ASQ also features transparent panels to allow the occupants to see into the water below.

Powering the Audi ASQ is an hydrogen fueled engine which acts as a electrical generator. The electricity is used to supply power to batteries which in turn provide power to the four electric motors.
