Toyota's first production car - Model AA was introduced in 1936. It was heavily based on Chrysler Airflow and chassis and electrics were copied from Ford. Engine was 3389 cc 6 cylinder engine with a 3-speed colum shift manual gearbox. The Model AA was produced from 1936 till 1943 and 1404 cars were completed.
In late 1930's Toyota and Ford had talked about a joint-venture but war interrupted talks.

Model AB Phaeton was the militarized version of Model AA. Mostly used as a staff car. Produced from 1936 till 1943 and only 353 cars produced.

Interestingly car production continued in Japan during the war although in very limited numbers. Model AC followed in 1943 and had minor improvements in body. Only 115 cars were made. Toyota didn't produce passenger cars in 1945-1946 at all and small scale Model AC production resumed again in 1947-1948.

Toyota's first production vehicle came a year before the fisrt passenger cars. Toyota thought it was safer to start with trucks as car market was developing slowly at that time. The Model G1 was loosely based on Ford and GM trucks. G-series was produced untill 1947 when it was replace by Model BM.

In 1947 arrived Model SA - Toyota's first all-new passenger car design in ten years. Toyota engineers had visited Volkswagen factory in Germany before the war and examined the technologies used. However the Model SA had a water-cooled 4-cylinder engine in the front. Many up-dates came in following years untill it was replaced by Crown model in 1955.
