TOP 10 - 2008 Mercedes SLK55 AMG

GM Plant - Mercedes

It sits there, all tension and sinew, ready to pounce on lesser cars. Start it up and it barks with a clear V8 voice that thumps off the neighbor's house, setting them discreetly peeking from behind their lace curtains. This is an SLK? Oh yeah. No longer a blocky Benz with dwarfism, the SLK55 AMG ripples with muscle and delivers speed like a spin kick to the temple. A bad-ass Mercedes, indeed.

TOP 9 - Volkswagen considering offering Polo in U.S. market

GM Plant - VolksWagen

The Rabbit is currently the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered vehicle in Volkswagen's U.S. fleet, getting around 26 mpg on the EPA's combined city/highway cycle. But V-Dub wants something better for the U.S. market. Speaking with Bloomberg, VW CEO, Stefan Jacoby revealed that the automaker is considering bringing a subcompact vehicle, similar to the Polo, to the U.S.

TOP 8 - McCain backs $5000 tax break for Volt, others

GM Plant - McCain

Presumptive Republican nominee for President, John McCain has wrapped up his tour and speaking engagement at General Motors, where the Arizona Senator discussed the U.S.'s current fuel situation and the proliferation of electric cars. Addressing the General's assembled workers, McCain said, "I would support tax credits for Americans who choose to buy the Volt and other automobiles that put us on track to energy independence." McCain later specified that the credit should be $5,000 as "an integral part of our ability to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil."

TOP 7 - 2010 Chevrolet Camaro revealed!

GM Plant - Chevrolet

CarTribe has procured a few shots and the initial details of the production Chevrolet Camaro ahead of its official unveiling this Monday. According to their report, the Camaro will come in LS, LT and SS trim, equipped with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic. Of course, that doesn't account for the very-obviously-marked RS car that is shown in the official photos, so who knows what the whole story is.

TOP 6 - VW up! could be switched to FWD

GM Plant - VW

Volkswagen is working hard to make the up! a reality, but the technological challenges of a rear engine, RWD car are proving to be more daunting than expected. The VW engineering team is reportedly having trouble conjuring up a low cost rear-engine layout. The problem has been trying to accommodate a radiator in the up!'s nose and transferring coolant through the car. Early up! prototypes are also having a difficult time with cross-wind stability due to the unbalanced heft of its rear drive/rear engine layout.

TOP 5 - Nissan GT-R laps the Top Gear test track in...

GM Plant - Nissan

This Sunday, Top Gear will finally get to test the mettle of the Nissan GT-R on the track. Well, "tracks" to be specific. Clarkson's appetite for tail-out antics wasn't satiated by last week's race against the bullet train, so he headed to a track in Japan to get a feel for the GT-R's capabilities at the limit and a chance to wring out Nissan's super coupe past its nanny-imposed 111 mph top speed.

TOP 4 - Chrysler may nix top-of-the-line Avenger, Sebring

GM Plant - Chrysler

Gas prices are up, which has led to increased interest in midsizers, more specifically, the midsize offerings from Chrysler's competition. The Sebring has taken a 30 percent sales whack this year, mostly due to reduced fleet sales. The Avenger's year has been a little brighter, posting a two-percent gain. Contrast that with everyone else; Malibu, Fusion, and Accord are up ten percent or more this year; and therein lies Chrysler's problem. Ditching Chrysler's outmoded V6 for the four-cylinder powertrain will deliver more competitive fuel economy, if you can stand the NVH increase.

TOP 3 - Lexus IS F to take on SPEED World Challenge GT

GM Plant - Lexus

There hasn't been any news on an IS F racecar since we heard rumors that the sedan, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, was really a reskinned 2004 Opel Vectra DTM. While Lexus might not be supporting a factory-backed motorsports program for the IS-F, that doesn't mean that privateer teams can't develop a car on their own.

TOP 2 - 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX gets upgraded to 265 HP

GM Plant - Subaru

A forum member at NASIOC has posted a corporate communiqué supposedly sent to North American Subaru dealers announcing the forthcoming arrival of the 2009 Impreza WRX. Two models are outlined in the release, the first, a new model dubbed the Impreza GT, will only be available with an automatic transmission and the 224 hp engine from the WRX. But that's not the real news...

Any sense of peace and calm after a two-week shutdown in early July is dissolving into a bad case of nerves at General Motors Corp.'s big metal stamping plant here.

The point was VW isn't doing particularly well on fuel economy and can do better, not for people to whip out their complaints about the Cobalt chassis.

VW sorely need a B-segment machine in North America, as well as more fuel-efficient derivatives of the C-segment Golf/Rabbit - that 2.5 litre lump is a dog's dinner. The 170bhp 1.4 litre twincharger would be ideal.

One point to note - the image in this post shows the last gen model; there's been a mild redesign recently.

At least VWUSA never charges extra for their state-of-the-art warranty expiration detection system.

I'm sure VWUSA will find some way to bugger it up.

As it is, I still want one. 3,700 lbs sucks, but with an all-independent suspension, 300 hp V6, and 6-speed stick, it's going to be like driving a CTS with a soul.
