Who's Best For Environmental Protection - Hybrid Car Wish We're Looking Forward To Mostly 20080703

No.1 - Chevrolet Malibu hybrid

This new hybrid uses the same hybrid powertrain as the Saturn Aura Green Line. It isn't a full hybrid like the Toyota Prius, which means that it can't run on electric power alone. It doesn't save much gas over nonhybrid models, so look elsewhere if you want to be a champion fuel miser.
No.2 - Honda Civic hybrid

The Civic hybrid relies on a simpler technology than the rival Toyota Prius and doesn't run in pure-electric mode, but its gasoline-electric powertrain still yields 40-50 mpg in economy and the Civic is far more frisky to drive. Want to be green and enjoy the drive? Go for the Civic.
No.3 - Toyota Prius

With annual sales of more than 100,000, the Prius is no longer an oddity. Environmentalists, people obsessed with lower fuel bills, and those wanting a compact car with tons of features and space are all well served. If not riveting to drive, the Prius is at least well built and nicely trimmed.
No.4 - Ford Escape hybrid

Like their conventionally propelled counterparts, the Escape and Mariner hybrids have been restyled inside and out for 2008. Both hybrids deliver distinctly better fuel economy than the standard versions, but at the expense of performance, and also at a hefty price premium.
No.5 - Nissan Altima hybrid

This is Nissan's first hybrid, but it's offered only in the eight states with California emissions standards. It uses Toyota's hybrid system under license, with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an auxiliary electric motor. The motor also serves as a generator to recharge the system batteries.
No.6 - Dodge Durango hybrid

The hybrid versions of Dodge (Durango) and Chrysler's (Aspen) big SUV combine a 5.7-liter HEMI with cylinder-deactivation technology and two electric motors. It promises a 25 percent fuel economy improvement on the highway and a 40 percent gain in the city, plus it can still tow a trailer.
No.7 - Chrysler Aspen hybrid

The hybrid versions of Dodge (Durango) and Chrysler's (Aspen) big SUV combine a 5.7-liter HEMI with cylinder-deactivation technology and two electric motors. It promises a 25 percent fuel economy improvement on the highway and a 40 percent gain in the city, plus it can still tow a trailer.
No.8 - GMC Yukon hybrid

GM follows up on its 2007 Tahoe/Yukon redesign with hybrid editions, full-size SUV firsts. Like other hybrids, the GM versions combine an internal combustion engine, in this case a 6.0-liter V-8, and an electric motor. GM claims mpg gains of up to 25%, with no sacrifice in performance.
No.9 - Lexus GS450h

Rarer than a Bentley (only about 2000 will be sold in the US in 2007) the gasoline-electric hybrid GS450h is a marvel of engineering. It's also heavy, insulated, and desperately lacking in fun. Still, as a luxurious if somewhat pricey way to get green cred with the neighbors, it excels.
No.10 - Saturn Vue Green Line

Saturn's hybrid aims for low cost with simplified technology: A motor/generator sandwiched between its 2.4-liter four-cylinder and four-speed automatic performs the idle stop, regenerative braking, and acceleration assist. The result is a five extra miles per gallon.
